During one of my campus interviews, I went through a pile of resumes before the first round. They all looked alike. Same template, same objective line, same list of skills. Then I picked up one from a final-year student that was written for my company and for the exact role we had come to hire for. Her summary named the role. Her projects were the ones closest to our work, placed right at the top.
It is a very common piece of advice, tailoring your resume. But in that whole batch, she was the only one who had actually done it. She got the interview call first.
This guide shows you how to write a resume for freshers that does the same thing. It answers one question for the person reading it: why should we meet you?
In this guide you will learn how to write a resume for freshers step by step, what recruiters check in the first few seconds, the mistakes that get a resume rejected straight away, and two sample resumes you can copy, one for tech students and one for non-tech students.
What Recruiters Look For in a Fresher Resume
A recruiter going through campus or job-portal applications spends very little time on each resume in the first round. So the first look decides everything. In that first look, I usually check four things:
- Is this person applying for the right role? The title of the job they want should be clear at the top.
- Do they meet the basic criteria? Degree, branch, year of passing and marks.
- Is there anything that matches our work? A project, internship or skill that connects to the role.
- Is it clean and correct? Typos and wrong details end the reading right there.
Freshers often worry that they have nothing to show. Well, a recruiter hiring freshers knows you do not have five years of experience. They are looking for proof that you can learn, that you care about this job, and that you are careful.
Your resume only has to show those three things.
How to Write a Resume for Freshers: Step by Step
To write a resume for freshers, keep it to one page and follow this order: header, a short summary, education with marks, projects and internships with results, skills that match the job, then certifications and activities. Change the summary and skills for every job you apply to.
Step 1: Pick a Simple, One-Page Format
For most freshers, a reverse-chronological format works best: newest education and experience first. Keep it to one page, use one clean font, and leave enough white space for the eye to rest.
Avoid tables, text boxes, icons and two-column designs if you are applying through job portals. Many companies use software called an Applicant Tracking System (ATS) to read resumes before a person does, and fancy layouts confuse it. If you are a design student, a creative layout can work for portfolio-led roles. Read our guide on creative resumes for design students for that.
For a detailed comparison of layouts, see the best resume format for freshers.
Step 2: Write a Clear Header
Your header should have:
- Full name
- Phone number
- A professional email address (
firstname.lastname@gmail.com, notcoolboy99@...) - City
- LinkedIn profile link, and GitHub or portfolio link if you have one
That is enough. Date of birth, father’s name, religion and full home address are not needed for most private jobs. A photo is optional; here is when a photo on your CV helps and when it does not.
Step 3: Add a Short Summary or Objective
Two or three lines at the top that say who you are, what you are good at, and which role you want. This is where tailoring starts.
A weak version: “Hardworking and motivated fresher seeking a challenging position in a reputed organisation.” Every second resume says this.
A better version: “B.Tech Computer Science graduate (2026) with two web projects in React and Node.js and a summer internship in testing. Looking for a Software Engineer Trainee role where I can build and ship features.”
You can choose between an objective and a summary. Our guides on resume summary examples for freshers, resume objectives and writing a fresher profile summary have ready examples for different streams.
Step 4: List Your Education Properly
For freshers, education usually comes right after the summary. For each qualification, show:
- Degree and specialisation
- College and university
- Year of passing (or expected)
- CGPA or percentage, exactly as on your marksheet
In India, include Class XII and Class X as well. Many companies have cut-offs for all three, and a missing score can get your resume filtered out by software or by an HR executive with a checklist.
Step 5: Show Projects and Internships With Results
This is the most important section for a fresher. For each project or internship, write two or three bullet points that say what you did and what came out of it.
Start each bullet with an action word: built, analysed, designed, organised, sold, reduced. Here is a list of action verbs for your resume.
Compare these two:
- “Worked on a project about inventory.”
- “Built an inventory tracker in Python for the college canteen that cut weekly stock-outs from 6 to 1.”
The second one gives the recruiter something to ask you about in the interview.
If you have not done an internship yet, read how to apply for an internship and our guide to an internship resume for freshers. If you have nothing yet, see how to write a resume with no experience.
Step 6: Add Skills That Match the Job
Split your skills into two groups:
- Technical or job skills: tools, software and subjects (Excel, Tally, Python, SQL, Canva, Google Analytics).
- Soft skills: communication, teamwork, problem-solving. Only list what you can back up with an example.
Read the job description and use the same words it uses. If it says “data analysis”, write “data analysis”, not “number crunching”. This helps with ATS screening. Our guides on resume keywords for freshers and soft skills for your resume go deeper.
Employers in India are also asking more about AI tools now. When TeamLease EdTech surveyed over 1,000 employers for its Career Outlook report for 2026, AI fluency was among the skills they most wanted in freshers, along with proof of real work like projects and internships. If you use ChatGPT, Copilot or similar tools for real work, like research, coding or presentations, say how you use them.
Step 7: Add Certifications and Activities
Online certifications show you learn on your own. Add the ones related to the job, with the platform and year. Here is how to add certifications to a fresher resume.
College activities count too: leading a club, organising a fest, sports, NSS, volunteering. These show leadership and responsibility. Pick the ones that say something about you, as explained in our guide on extracurricular activities in a resume.
Step 8: Tailor It for Every Job
Keep one master resume with everything. For each application, make a copy and adjust:
- The summary, with the role and company in mind
- The order of projects, most relevant first
- The skills, using words from the job description
Another example from my own hiring. Some years ago, an experienced candidate came in with a list of the customers he had worked with in his earlier companies. That list matched our firm’s customers almost exactly. I did not have to imagine how he would fit. He had already shown me.
As a fresher, you will not have a customer list. But you can do the same thing on a smaller scale. If the company works in banking, put your finance project first. If they make consumer products, lead with your marketing internship. Show the recruiter that your world already overlaps with theirs.
Mistakes That Get a Resume Rejected Straight Away
I have rejected many applications without reading past the first few lines. The reasons were almost always the same.
Wrong details in the application email
Applications came to me with the wrong job title and the wrong location. It tells me the candidate sent the same email to many companies without reading it once. If you cannot get our role right in the subject line, why would I trust you with our customers? Read how to mail your resume to HR before you send anything.
Typos
One spelling mistake in a resume is noticed. Two, and the reader starts looking for more. It suggests carelessness, and nobody wants a careless person on their team.
Wrong or unsure facts
Some resumes had dates, marks or project details that did not hold up when I asked about them in the interview. You could see the candidate was not sure of their own facts. Everything on your resume is something you may be asked about. If you cannot explain it confidently, take it off.
Other common mistakes
A generic objective, a two-page resume full of hobbies, and duties listed instead of results also hurt you. Our full list of common resume mistakes freshers make covers these with fixes.
Small mistakes close big doors.

Your Resume Checklist Before You Hit Send
Before every application, go through this:
- Job title and company name are correct in the email subject and summary
- Location in the email matches the job posting
- No spelling or grammar mistakes (read it aloud once)
- Every date, mark and number matches your certificates
- Phone number and email are correct and working
- One page, saved as a PDF named Firstname-Lastname-Resume.pdf
- Skills use the same words as the job description
- You can talk for two minutes about every line on it
For a longer version, use our resume checklist for freshers.
Resume, Cover Letter and Interview: How They Work Together
Your resume gets you shortlisted. Your cover letter or application email explains why you want this particular job. And the interview checks whether you are the person the resume describes.
So keep them consistent. Here is how to write a cover letter as a fresher, and the difference between a cover letter and a resume. If someone asks you for a CV instead, read CV vs resume in India. Once you are shortlisted, prepare with our interview preparation guide for freshers and practise your self-introduction.
Also make sure your LinkedIn profile tells the same story. Recruiters often check it after reading your resume. Here is how to build a strong LinkedIn profile as a student.

Final Word
Out of a whole pile of resumes, the one I still remember was not the best designed. It was the one written for us.
You do not need years of experience to do that. You need to read the job description properly, pick your most relevant work, check every detail twice, and send it to the right person with the right job title.
Do that, and you are already ahead of most of the pile.
Frequently asked questions
How long should a fresher resume be?
One page. A recruiter decides in under a minute whether to read further, and a fresher rarely has enough relevant material to fill two pages without padding. If something does not help you get this particular job, it can go.
Should I put a photo on my resume?
For most private-sector jobs in India, a photo is optional and adds nothing to your chances. Some government, airline and hospitality roles ask for one. If the job posting does not ask, leave it out and use the space for a project.
What should I write in a resume if I have no experience?
Lead with education, then academic projects, internships, certifications and college activities. Write each one as what you did and what came out of it. A final-year project described well counts for more than a long list of hobbies.
Should I mention my 10th and 12th marks?
Yes, for campus placements and most fresher roles in India. Many companies have a cut-off for Class X, XII and graduation scores, so leaving them out can get your resume filtered. Show CGPA or percentage exactly as on your marksheet.
Is a resume the same as a CV in India?
In everyday use in India the two words are used for the same document. Strictly, a CV is a longer academic record and a resume is a short, job-focused summary. For fresher jobs, what recruiters want is a one-page resume.
Do I need a different resume for every job?
You need one master resume and a tailored version for each application. Changing the summary, the order of your skills and the projects you highlight to match the job description takes 15 minutes and makes a real difference.
